Effort But No Profit

When effort but no profit defines your season, it may reveal more than hard work—it points to a heart God longs to realign and bless with lasting fruit.

“They have sown wheat and have reaped thorns; they have tired themselves out but profit nothing. They shall be ashamed of their harvests because of the fierce anger of the Lord” (Jeremiah 12:13).

God’s people had been sowing seeds yet reaping nothing. Though they strained themselves, they were working with no profit, gaining nothing.

What had happened? God told them, “Many shepherds have destroyed my vineyard …  they have made my pleasant portion a desolate wilderness” (v. 10).

The land was no longer fruitful. Why? Because God’s people were guilty of sin and had turned against Him.

God wanted to bless His people. But for the flow of His blessings to begin again, His people needed to stop disobeying Him. They needed to commit themselves to serving and pleasing Him.

An example of fruitless efforts is the time the disciples fished all night but caught nothing. Jesus told them to cast their nets into deeper water. They immediately caught so many fish that their nets began to break (Luke 5:4–6), illustrating how God’s blessing transforms fruitless toil into an abundant harvest.

Do you ever find yourself working hard but seeing no fruit? These are times to examine your life. Are you investing your time, efforts, and finances in the right places?

Renew your commitment to Jesus. Seek first God’s Kingdom. He is ready to take away your burdens and reward you with an abundant harvest!
