Dry Bones

Daily Devotional2 Minutes

“He … set me down in the middle of the valley … This is what the LORD God said to these bones, ‘Behold, I am going to make breath enter you that you may come to life … and you will know that I am the LORD.'” – Ezekiel 37:1-2, 5-6 NASB

It was a dark time for God’s people. Many had been exiled. The temple had been destroyed and its treasures removed. Then God gave Ezekiel a startling vision.

In this vision, God’s Spirit brought him to a valley full of dry bones, a place without life. God told Ezekiel that these bones would be re-formed. Then God breathed on these bones, and they “came to life” and became “an exceedingly great army” (v. 10).

God explained, “These bones are the whole house of Israel.” He would cause His people to “come up out of [their] graves” and “come to life,” and He would place them “on [their] own land” (Ezekiel 37:11-14).

For centuries, these prophecies remained a mystery. Many asked whether God would bring His people into the land of Israel again. This seemed to be impossible. Yet in 1948, this is exactly what took place. The world watched with amazement as Jews came from across the globe and united in the land of Israel. Yes, God’s Word is true.

Just as these dry bones came back to life, we can be sure that all the Bible’s prophecies will be fulfilled. People may doubt God’s Word. They have their own interpretations or develop their own analyses, but we can be sure that God will keep His promises – all of them. He will accomplish His purposes, and He will bless those who bless His people.

Reflection Question: Compose a prayer asking God to breathe life into your dry places.
