Driven to Seek God

Daily Devotional2 Minutes

Learn how to be driven to seek God in difficult circumstances like Hezekiah did.

“Now when King Hezekiah heard the report, he tore his clothes, covered himself with sackcloth, and entered the house of the LORD.”Isaiah 37:1 NASB

Hezekiah knew all about God. A descendant of David, he had been taught God’s laws. He knew the history of his people. He respected God’s Word, and he lived in ways that were pleasing to God.

But none of this prevented the Assyrians from assaulting Judah, Hezekiah’s nation. Under their king, Sennacherib, it seemed that nothing could stop the powerful Assyrian army, which “marched against all the fortified cities of Judah and seized them” (Isaiah 36:1).

Sennacherib’s representative warned that all of Judah would be forced to surrender, and resistance was futile. Hezekiah knew these were not idle threats and taunts—defeat seemed inevitable.

In these dire circumstances, Hezekiah was driven to seek God. Stripping off his royal wardrobe, he humbled himself in sackcloth. God heard his prayers and rescued his nation.

When faced with crises or insurmountable problems, people are often driven to seek God. This has been true for people of all ages in every generation. These desperate cries to God may come too late for those who have intentionally defied Him and disobeyed His Word. But for those who sincerely desire to serve Him, God is able to intervene in their lives.

Remember Hezekiah’s example when you go through tough times. Seek to live in obedience to God’s Word. When you face troubles and trials, humble yourself before Him. Cry out for His wisdom. Seek His help and deliverance.

Reflection Question: What circumstances are you needing God to intervene in right now?
