Distractions

Daily Devotional2 Minutes

Paul’s letter to Timothy shows us how to live a life free of distractions, so we can focus on God and His Word.

“Suffer hardship with me, as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. No soldier in active service entangles himself in the affairs of everyday life, so that he may please the one who enlisted him.”—2 Timothy 2:3–4 NASB

Concentration. Focus. Determination. These are characteristics of effective soldiers. Why? Because soldiers cannot afford to become distracted. In battle, their lives are in constant jeopardy. Enemies can lurk around every corner. Soldiers cannot let down their guard or forget about their assignment or enemy for even a minute.

Victory, and even survival, depends upon a soldier’s discipline and submission to his commanding officer. He must act in harmony with the rest of the military, following plans precisely and coordinating his moves with the actions of other soldiers.

These are also important principles for the Christian life. But many Christians fail to have the intent focus of soldiers. Many pursue the wrong goals and think about the wrong things. Others allow the world and Satan to distract them and cause them to lose sight of God’s Word and His call on their lives.

When we allow distractions, our hearts and minds become divided. We concentrate on the opinions of others or the pleasures, rewards, and things of this world. As a result, we miss the high calling of God.

Today, make sure that you’re a good soldier in God’s army. Don’t be entangled in “the affairs of everyday life” or occupy your time with petty problems, gossip, and other distractions. Stay focused on God’s call and the assignment He has given you. He will bring you victory!

Reflection Question: What distractions do you currently need to weed out of your life?
