Defeat Changes to Victory

It had been a humiliating loss. The Israelites had been defeated in battle by the forces of the tiny town of Ai. When they sought God, they realized they had been overconfident and gone into battle without seeking His guidance. Even more damaging, sin was in the camp.

After they dealt with the sin and sought God anew, He sent them back to face the people of Ai but with a different strategy. He directed them to appear to repeat the same actions that led to their defeat. This time they were to fool Ai into thinking they would engage in battle in the same way. Instead, they would be setting a trap. God was showing them how to use their mistakes to turn defeat into victory.

We all know the feeling when we sin or make mistakes. At such moments, we may feel hopeless or discouraged. But the Bible assures us that God is ready to forgive us if we confess our sins (1 John 1:9). He even can turn our defeats into victory.

The Bible tells, “In all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose” (Romans 8:28). He can work everything for good, even mistakes.
