Committed to God’s Work

The people in Jerusalem were taunted and threatened. Under such constant opposition, it would have been easy to be intimidated or afraid. But after seeking God, Nehemiah adopted a strategy that combined practical action with spiritual commitment: They prayed and “set a watch…day and night” (v. 9). Operating with this combination, they remained faithful at the work God called them to do, even having weapons in one hand while working with the other.

As a result of this determination, God protected and blessed them, and frustrated the purposes of their enemies. Every time they were threatened, they followed this pattern. Thus, the work continued and the wall was completed.

As Christians, we may experience many forms of threats, attacks, and distractions. We may be questioned or taunted. We may feel vulnerable, weak, discouraged, worried, or afraid.

If this happens, we need the same kind of determination that inspired Nehemiah. And we need to remember that Satan is our ultimate enemy. He delights in sowing confusion, doubt, and fear. He wants us to stop doing the work of God’s Kingdom.

If you feel threatened or distracted in any way, seek God, renew your confidence in Him, and be determined to do His work. Don’t be intimidated or discouraged. Instead, “stand firm against the devil; resist him and he will flee from you” (James 4:7).

Today, renew your confidence in God. Commit yourself to Him. Stay focused on Him, doing the work He has called you to do. You can know that He will protect you, and grant you victory.
