Commitment

Daily Devotional2 Minutes

God wants an intimate, two-way relationship of faithfulness and commitment with us.

“I am my beloved’s and my beloved is mine.”Song of Solomon 6:3 NASB

Using the language of romantic love, Solomon described a relationship of intimacy between a man and a woman. Each belonged to the other. Paul made a similar point when he wrote: “The wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does; and likewise the husband also does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does” (1 Corinthians 7:4).

Both Paul and Solomon depicted a relationship of mutual commitment. Although these words describe the kind of relationship God wants for a marriage between a man and woman, the ultimate expression of this is the relationship God wants with His people.

This is a relationship the Lord desires with each of us. He wants us to realize we completely belong to Him. And, in a mysterious way, He belongs to us.

We see this truth described in the many covenants God had with His people. Each covenant had two parts. As He told the children of Israel, “If you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant, then you shall be My own possession among all the peoples” (Exodus 19:5).

Remember that God wants to have this kind of relationship with you—an intimate relationship of faithfulness and commitment, where you understand that you belong to Him, but He also is committed to you.

Seek Him with your whole being, for He longs to demonstrate His love for you.

Reflection Question: How can you work to grow intimacy between you and your Heavenly Father?
