Made Clean and Free

David was conscious of ways God had saved him. He knew that God heard him when he cried and delivered him from “the pit of destruction.” He had given him stability and confidence, with a new attitude and a heart filled with praise. His deliverance had become a testimony to others. He knew God had been faithful and blessed him because he trusted in Him, and delighted to do His will.

Yet, facing ongoing problems, David cried to God for deliverance and help. His plea was that He “make haste.” He asked God to bring shame and humiliation to those “who seek my life to destroy it.” That He would repay this opposition.

While conscious about the problems caused by these adversaries, David also realized that he was not completely innocent. While feeling “surrounded” by “evils beyond number,” he also felt “overtaken” by his own “iniquities.”

As he looked at his own heart, he realized he had made mistakes and done things that were displeasing to God. In total honesty, he admitted that his iniquities were “more numerous than the hairs of my head.” He knew that his own heart had failed him. That he needed to get right with God.

It can be easy to blame others for our problems. But the Bible encourages us to remember our own responsibility. None of us is completely free of sin; we all make mistakes. We need to remember David’s prayer, “Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me” (Psalm 51:10).

Today remember that God is ready to defend and help you, and provide what you need. But also remember to stay humble before Him. To seek to be clean in His sight.
