Christmas Carols

Christmas Carols

Music seems to be everywhere throughout the Christmas season. The story of Jesus’ birth is celebrated with special concerts and widely known carols. Even non-Christians know the words and are familiar with the basic message.

But for a long time, many considered this kind of music to be too secular and not spiritual. Gradually this attitude began to change as people became more interested in contemporary worship music.

In 1696, Nicholas Brady and Nahum Tate collaborated on a new edition of hymns, some of which focused on the birth of Jesus. Initially, their revisions met with resistance, but gradually they gained acceptance.

In one of their most popular hymns, Tate and Brady told the story of the visit of the angels. The title told the message: “While shepherds watched their flocks by night.” The hymn describes how “the angel of the Lord came down, and glory shone around.”

They ended this hymn with the message of praise: “All glory be to God on high, and to the earth be peace; goodwill henceforth from Heaven to men begin and never cease!” Throughout this Christmas season, as you hear familiar music, think about the message and the meaning.

Remember the Biblical account birth of Jesus. Remember the life-changing truth and the timeless message that shook the world. Remember that Jesus came to die for sinners – for you. Remember that His love is real; celebrate his birth with glorious Christmas music!
