Boasts

Daily Devotional2 Minutes

“May I never boast about anything except the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ.”—Galatians 6:14 ESV

John Bowring could have boasted for many reasons. In his wide-ranging career, he had been an economist, writer, member of parliament, and governor of Hong Kong. These successes gave him many opportunities to exercise influence and attract praise. Yet, instead, a devout believer, he gave all the glory to God.

One day, Bowring was on a ship, sailing past the coast of Macao, China, and saw on the shore the remains of an old church that had been ravaged by fire. Above the ruins, the spire of the church remained in place, with a cross standing strong and tall. That cross reminded him of what was important in his life.

Instead of glorying in the successes of his career, he provided his perspective in a hymn he wrote, “In the Cross of Christ I Glory.” He described how the cross towered over every event in human history.

His life had been filled with ups and downs, but the cross changed everything. The cross never disappointed: “It glows with peace and joy.” The cross provided a peace “that knows no measure, joys that through all time abide.”

Bowring’s tombstone is marked not by his many accomplishments but by the title of this hymn. Even in death, he pointed everyone to Jesus. Today, do not glory in your accomplishments or the praise you have received. Never boast in anything except the cross of Jesus.

Reflection Question: Reflect on what the cross of Christ means to you.
