Blinded in Darkness

Daily Devotional2 Minutes

In order to protect Lot and his household, the men of Sodom were blinded in darkness by angels. God will protect you from wickedness too.

“They struck the men who were at the doorway of the house with blindness, from the small to the great, so they became weary of trying to find the doorway.”Genesis 19:11 NASB

Sodom was so corrupted by sin that God’s judgment became inevitable. When two angels approached the city, Lot invited them into his house. Soon “the men of Sodom, surrounded the house,” demanding to “have relations” with these angels. Lot pleaded that they not “act wickedly,” even offering them his two daughters instead. But they continued to press, nearly breaking down the door.

Suddenly, the angels “brought Lot into the house,” shutting the door. Then they struck the men of Sodom with blindness. The New Jerusalem Bible translation says the angels “dazzled … with a blinding light.”

The men of Sodom demonstrated that darkness is attractive for those who live in sin. Jesus said, “If anyone walks during the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him” (John 11:10); and “everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come to the Light, so that his deeds will not be exposed” (John 3:20). But the angels proved that the power of light will dispel the darkness.

Jesus came to be “the Light of the world” (John 9:5). In the same way, He called us to be “the light of the world,” reminding us of our responsibility to shine His Light (Matthew 5:14–16).

Make sure to let your light shine. Be bold and confident. Live in such a way that the lost see Christ’s light and the grip of darkness is broken.

Reflection Question: How are you a light shining in the darkness of your current situation?

Lord, give me boldness to stand for You. Help me to shine brightly and be a strong and courageous witness. In Jesus’ name, amen.
