Believing Faith

Over the years, yellow fever devastated people around the world. In fact, the fever was so deadly that it killed a tenth of all people in Philadelphia in 1793. Despite an ongoing quest, no cure could be found.

Finally, a breakthrough was achieved by William Crawford Gorgas, who was born on this day in 1854 in Mobile, Alabama. In 1880, one year after receiving his medical degree, he entered the U.S. Army as a surgeon. In 1898, Gorgas was appointed sanitary officer of Havana, which had been plagued with yellow fever. Shortly after his arrival, he established an insect extermination program, which eliminated the fever from Havana within 90 days.

This success caught the attention of those who were building the Panama Canal. Gorgas was made a colonel and sent to the Canal Zone, where yellow fever had crippled efforts to build the canal. In two years, the fever was wiped out. An obstacle that seemed hopeless had been overcome.

In the spiritual realm, many of us face situations like the people faced when battling yellow fever. We think of the man whose son had been possessed by a spirit. Nothing seemed to work. Not even the disciples could cast out this spirit. But Jesus healed the boy and cast out the demon.

Are you facing situations that seem impossible? Are there “mountains” before you that seem too difficult to climb? Are you dealing with problems that seem hopeless?

Remember the words of Jesus: “All things are possible to him who believes.” Have faith in Him to do the impossible today!
