Anyone Can Pray

The Great Revival that swept America from 1857–59 was inspired almost entirely by ordinary Christians. It was sparked when a layman, Jeremiah Lanphier, started holding prayer meetings for other laymen. The impact of his commitment led to a revival that swept across denominations and around the world. People in every walk of life and theology were changed by the power of God.

It can be easy to assume that only ministers or church leaders can have effective prayer lives. We can think that prayer can only be effective when led by some spiritual superstar. But the Bible makes it clear that there are no distinctions in prayer. Any believer can pray with power, at any time. Anyone can have an effective prayer life!

We see this in the life of Anna. She was not a priest or a religious leader, but simply a widow who devoted herself “day and night” to “worshiping God with fasting and prayer.” She made a real difference because she was committed to prayer.

Today, on America’s “National Day of Prayer,” remember that you can make a difference in prayer. All you need is commitment, a decision to devote your time and energy to seeking God. Then, start praying—silently and out loud.

Ask God to give you a burden for prayer. Spend time with Him in your “prayer closet.” Pray without ceasing. Seek Him for the needs of your friends and family. Intercede for your country and the world. Pray for the spread of the Gospel. And when you have the opportunity, pray together with others.

God is available. Don’t delay. Call on Him right now!
