A Sensible Idea

Daily Devotional2 Minutes

What seems like a sensible idea at the time can be contrary to God’s Word. Be sure to pray about God’s will before deciding on a course of action.

“Now the one who presented his offering on the first day was Nahshon the son of Amminadab, of the tribe of Judah.”—Numbers 7:12 NASB

The idea made sense to the people of Reuben and Gad. They looked around and liked the idea of settling east of the Jordan River. The land provided the ideal environment to care for their livestock, establish roots, and raise their families.

They set aside the goal they had pursued for 40 years in the wilderness, even though they were approaching the Promised Land. When they asked Moses about their idea, pledging to support their brothers and sisters until the Promised Land was conquered, Moses approved.

However, there is no record that anyone prayed or asked God—not even Moses. If they had asked the Lord, they would have learned that He had a different perspective. As He detailed the eastern border of the land He was giving to His people, it didn’t include these lands east of the Jordan (Numbers 34:1–12).

Forever these tribes would be a symbol of people who failed to enter God’s Promised Land. They followed their own plans and failed to receive His full blessings.

How easily we can be like these Israelites—conceiving ideas that make sense to us, rationalizing, justifying, and even convincing ourselves that we’re obeying God and doing His will.

Be willing to set aside your own ideas. Commit every decision to the Lord. Start each day with His Word, making it the basis for your thoughts and plans. Continually seek His direction.

Reflection Question: Have you done something sensible, only to find out it wasn’t God’s plan?

Prayer
Holy Spirit, I commit my decisions to You. I seek Your direction. Lead and guide me. I surrender my life to You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
