A Real Relationship

Something was different about Nicholas Herman. That became clear to Joseph de Beaufort when they met in August 1666 in a monastery outside Paris. Herman was living in almost complete anonymity. Wounded as a soldier, he was crippled and suffered constant pain. He worked for years as a cook before being transferred to the sandal shop.

What set him apart was that he had been transformed by the presence of God. Unlike other religious people, he didn’t just know about God; he had a personal relationship with Him – a relationship so real that God was the center of his life.

Herman adopted the name Lawrence of the Resurrection, or simply Brother Lawrence. de Beaufort wanted to know how he became so close to God. Through letters and conversations, Lawrence shared how God transformed his life and the kind of relationship that He offered to any who would seek Him. So powerful were these insights that de Beaufort compiled them into The Practice of the Presence of God, a book that still inspires believers.

Brother Lawrence had a relationship with God most people would never believe possible. But it was all true!
