You have an inheritance from God. Now boldly walk forward in it!
Many believers know they have an inheritance from God. Sadly, many don’t know how to enter into that inheritance and claim its promises as God intends.
The key to understanding how to live in His provision is 2 Peter 1:2-4:
Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord, as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue, by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
Let’s focus on two phrases from that passage:
“Grace and peace be yours in abundance.” God’s provision for us is in abundance. God is not a stingy God. He is not poor. He is not in financial need. He is the author and source of everything in the universe. When He provides for us, He provides in abundance.
“In the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.” This indicates that every provision of God comes through knowing God and Jesus. I put it this way: God is the only source; Jesus is the only channel.
Finally, do not miss this astonishing statement: “His divine power has given to us all things.” It does not say God will give us. It says God has already given us everything we need.
Dear friend, when you see God as the Bible reveals Him to be and give God His rightful place in your life, you will live in the land of More than Enough! The promises are abundant provisions. Enter in!
Moving into the Provision
The Old Testament book of Joshua describes how God’s people, the Israelites, entered into the land God promised them. This closely parallels what happens as we gain our inheritance. In the Old Testament under a leader named Joshua, God led His people into the Promised Land. In the New Testament under a leader named Jesus (which is the same name), God leads His people into a land of promises.
Let’s learn from Joshua and the Israelites how to gain our full inheritance. Joshua 1 opens with a vital principle: there is a difference between a legal right and experiential possession of what God promises. In verse 2, God says, “I am giving.” In verse 3, He says, “I have given.” From the point of God’s promise onward, Israel had the legal right but they still did not have experiential possession of the land. Once God says, “I give it to you,” as far as God is concerned from then on it has been given.
Moving on, their first two successes came through miracles: crossing the Jordan and capturing Jericho. But listen carefully – after that, they had to fight for all the rest. Joshua and the Israelites give three principles for gaining your inheritance:
1. God will do miracles when necessary.
2. You will have to fight the opposing powers of darkness.
3. You have to set your feet on what God has promised and take possession of it individually and personally.
When you are born again, you legally become God’s child and heir to all God has (Romans 8:16–17). Heir to the blessings, but also heir to the sufferings. You cannot skip the sufferings and expect to inherit the blessings. The condition is “if [you] suffer with Him.”
Dear friend, the sufferings do not compare to the glories of the inheritance. Boldly walk forward in the loving promises of our Heavenly Father.
