After God’s Own Heart

The Bible says that God “found in David…a man after My heart, who will do all My will” (Acts 13:22). We see why in 2 Samuel 1.

First, David was a warrior (v. 1)—unafraid, willing to serve in any situation and fight any battle. He also was man of principle, who sought to do the right thing even at his own expense. This trait could surprise others, such as the Amalekite who brought news of Saul’s death and claimed to have killed him. Surely, he thought, this would be received by David as good news. However, to David, this man had done something unthinkable, “destroying the Lord’s anointed” (vs. 2-16).

David also was sensitive and compassionate. He was a poet and musician, willing to vividly express his emotions. Upon hearing of the death of Saul and Jonathan, he tore his clothes, mourned, fasted, and chanted a lament that was “to be taught to the people of Judah” (vs. 11-27). David didn’t want Saul to be remembered for his flaws, but for the good things he’d done. And Jonathan had been his dear friend. Together, Saul and Jonathan were the mighty who “have fallen,” and “they were swifter than eagles…stronger than lions.”

Do you want to be a person after the heart of God? Then follow David’s example. Serve God faithfully, passionately, and boldly. Be ready to engage in spiritual warfare. Be a person of principle. Obey God’s Word in every situation. Don’t give in to compromise. Seek to express love and concern for others. Be sensitive and caring, always ready to do the will of God.
