The Rulers of This World

The end came in a solitary prison cell. For William Marcy “Boss” Tweed, his death was in stark contrast to how he lived his life.

Born in New York in 1823, Tweed gained popularity as a chair maker and volunteer fireman. Gradually he built a power base and was elected to political office.

Along with the “Tammany Hall” organization of which he became a part, Tweed won control of the New York City government. He used his power to appoint friends to key positions and amass great personal wealth. As the city’s “boss,” it has been estimated that he stole more than $1 billion in today’s currency.

Tweed and his machine often used illegal means to control political offices. Their power spread even to the state legislature and judicial appointments. Tweed himself was elected to the U.S. Congress. But eventually his corruption was exposed, and he was convicted and imprisoned. During a second prison term, he escaped to Spain, but Tweed was arrested and returned to America.

When he died, on this day in 1878, Tweed was seriously ill and all alone.

History is filled with accounts of people like Tweed who have no concern for God, morality, or truth. They think they can “take counsel together” and ignore God and His Word. Yet, all the while, He knows what they are doing. And eventually He will make things right.

Today, make sure you are free from corruption and living a life of purity. Dedicate your life and resources to serving God. Instead of pursuing earthly power and riches, seek the Kingdom that will never fade away, and the rewards that will last into eternity.
