Salt of the Earth

Tomorrow is election day in the United States. It is a day for Americans to help determine the direction their country goes and who will serve in public offices. This also should be a day for Christians to let their voice be heard…yet millions of Christians will not even vote!

In an analysis of the 2000 elections, Barna Research discovered that 41% of born-again adults did not vote. How will these 35 million Christians justify their actions to God? Sadly, year after year, the same patterns emerge!

Why do so many Christians fail to fulfill this basic responsibility? Perhaps they feel helpless and don’t think their votes matter. Perhaps they are not excited about the candidates or disagree with some of their views. Perhaps they’re busy and don’t want to take the time.

But, before God, none of these excuses can be justified. Jesus said that Believers are the salt of the earth and the light of the world. We have an obligation to be salt and light. If we are not, we’re like the salt that is “thrown out and trampled underfoot as worthless.”

The Bible also directs us to intercede for our political leaders. We’re to pray “for kings and all who are in authority” (1 Timothy 2:2).

If you are an American, make sure that you vote, and encourage others to vote as well. Ask God to guide your voting selection. And, in whatever country you live, pray for your country and your leaders. Let your voice be heard. Remember: You and other Believers are the light of the world and the salt of the earth.
