The Spirit at Rest

In “The Spirit at Rest,” Acts 2 reveals a powerful picture of the Holy Spirit who not only moves mightily but also draws near, bringing peace, guidance, and personal relationship.

“And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them” (Acts 2:3).

On the day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit fell suddenly and dramatically with life-changing force and “a sound like a mighty rushing wind” (v. 2). The disciples saw the visible impact of the Spirit as “divided tongues as of fire appeared to them.” Next, these tongues of fire “rested on each one of them.”

The Bible uses a Greek word for fire that means to sit down. Amid this display of God’s power was a picture of relationship. The Holy Spirit could intervene in supernatural ways, open the eyes of the blind, or part the waters of the sea. But He also came to rest, be comfortable with us, and be a welcome guest.

When the Spirit came, He was not only there for the church, but He also came in a personal way for each individual. He was there to establish a relationship, supply what each person needed, and enable them to do God’s calling.

We’re given this relational insight through Paul’s description of peace and gentleness among the fruit of the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:22–23). The Spirit is with us all the time—in the storms and in the stillness of the night, when we need guidance and breakthroughs, and when we need peace and rest.

God’s Spirit is with you right now. Learn to hear His voice. Allow Him to change your life and fill you with God’s goodness, kindness, self-control, faithfulness, love, gentleness, patience, and peace.
