Freed from Sin

Daily Devotional•3 Minutes

Do you ever feel like you’re still carrying guilt Jesus already paid for? Leviticus 4 shows that no one is beyond needing—or receiving—that freedom.

“If anyone sins unintentionally in any of the LORD’s commandments … if it is the anointed priest who sins … he shall offer … a bull from the herd without blemish to the LORD for a sin offering” (Leviticus 4:2–3 NASB).

God wanted His people to be freed from sin. How? By offering a bull “without blemish.”

We can imagine how some might have thought this was unnecessary. Maybe they were “good” people, thinking that offerings were only needed by criminals, idolaters, and those who did blatantly immoral deeds.

But God stressed that no one was exempt. Everyone needed to bring a sin offering.

This applied to the community as a whole (v. 13), leaders (v. 22), and “anyone of the common people” (v. 27). It was required whether they sinned intentionally or unintentionally and whether the sin was big or small.

These principles remain true. The Bible makes it clear that “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). None of us is “good enough.” We all are “slaves of sin” (Romans 6:17).

But God has given a way for us to be free—by accepting the finished work of Jesus, the Lamb of God. He became our sin offering. We now can be redeemed “with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot” (1 Peter 1:19).

Yes, “the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:23).

Humble yourself before God and be grateful for all that He’s done for you. You don’t need to carry the weight of sin. You can be free!

Reflection Question: Describe the freedom you’ve felt when you’ve come to God for forgiveness.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did even the “anointed priest” need a sin offering?

To show that no one—regardless of position or perceived righteousness—is exempt from needing atonement. Romans 3:23 later confirms that all have sinned.

What’s the difference between intentional and unintentional sin in this passage?

Leviticus 4 addresses unintentional sins specifically, but the broader principle—that sin, however committed, requires atonement—still applies; intentional sin is addressed elsewhere in the sacrificial system.

How is Jesus described as fulfilling the sin offering?

1 Peter 1:19 calls His sacrifice that of “a lamb without blemish or spot,” directly echoing the unblemished-animal requirement of the Levitical offerings.
