The Grain Offering

Do you see your hard work as something you earned, or something God provided? The grain offering answers that question in a surprising way.

“When anyone brings a grain offering as an offering to the LORD, his offering shall be of fine flour. He shall pour oil on it and put frankincense on it” (Leviticus 2:1).

God commanded the Israelites to bring grain offerings. Grain represented a unique way that they depended on Him. By bringing grain, they recognized that God controlled their destiny and that they depended on Him for everything.

The grain they offered was the result of many factors. It required good soil and the planting of the right kind of seed. It also required water and nourishment, as well as time spent rooting out weeds and providing protection from storms.

After such a great investment of their time and resources, farmers knew their harvest was precious. They could be tempted to keep the grain for themselves, but by making this offering, they recognized that their harvest was a byproduct of God’s blessing. They gladly returned a portion to Him as part of their worship.

The grain offering provides an important model for us. In our own ways, we can look at our resources and the work we’ve invested—the years of education and training, our experience and labor—and simply assume we can do what we want with the resources we gain. However, remember that you, too, owe everything to God.

When you make an offering to Him, you’re acknowledging your gratitude and dependency. You’re celebrating His faithfulness and your belief in His promises. Trust Him today.
