Faith That Obeys Without Answers

First Kings 17 reveals how the ways of God often defy human logic, calling believers to faith that obeys without answers while we trust Him fully even when His provision and purposes seem unclear.

“‘Arise, go to Zarephath … I have commanded a widow there to feed you.’ … ‘I have … a handful of flour in a jar and a little oil in a jug’” (1 Kings 17:9, 12).

Elijah had traveled a long way to the town of Zarephath. He was there because God told him that He had “commanded” a widow from this town to provide for him.

When he arrived, he found the widow, but she seemed unaware of any such command. Indeed, she seemed completely surprised by Elijah’s visit and requests. And she was so poor that she had only enough food for a single meal for herself and her son.

Many people facing these circumstances would have felt a mistake had been made. But Elijah knew that God often works “in strange and mysterious ways” (Isaiah 45:15 TLB), and His ways are not our ways (Isaiah 55:8–9). He asks us to trust and obey even when we don’t understand.

To the human mind, this plan made no sense. Why would God send His servant to such a poor widow? But Elijah was not distracted by such questions. Instead, he obeyed and spoke God’s Word … and a great miracle took place!

With what little she had, the widow prepared bread for the prophet, and God multiplied her gift, so “the jar of flour was not spent, neither did the jug of oil become empty” (v. 16).

Remember that God’s ways may not be your ways, then “walk by faith, not by sight” (2 Corinthians 5:7). Be ready to step out and obey, having absolute confidence in Him in every situation.
