When Jesus Calls for Everything

Daily Devotional2 Minutes

Mark 1 reveals the heart of discipleship—when Jesus calls for everything, He invites us to leave what we cling to, follow Him without reservation, and trust Him to redefine our lives and purpose.

“He saw Simon and Andrew … casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. And Jesus said to them, ‘Follow me, and I will make you become fishers of men.’ And immediately they left their nets and followed him” (Mark 1:16–18).

“Follow me”—simple words that were easy to understand. The first disciples didn’t know they had been given perhaps the most radical command they would ever receive. In these two words, Jesus conveyed the essence of what it meant to be His disciple.

Why were these words so radical? Because they required a disciple to leave everything, follow Jesus wherever He went, and “deny himself and take up his cross” every day (Matthew 16:24).

It was a command that always applied, no matter what problems they faced or what other people thought or said. That command forced some to rethink their priorities, while for others, it simply was too radical.

Throughout His ministry, Jesus kept returning to this message. Demonstrating its importance, He told the disciples, “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me” (John 10:27). He taught them, “If anyone serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there will my servant be also. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him” (John 12:26).

Jesus reinforced this point after His resurrection, stressing to the disciples His continuing command: “Follow me” (John 21:19).

Jesus still gives this command to you today! Follow Him. Let Him direct your path! When you face temptations or feel pressure to conform to this world, leave everything behind to follow Jesus. Make a radical commitment—an act of complete surrender.

Reflection Question: What might Jesus be asking me to leave behind today?

Prayer
Dear Lord Jesus, it’s my desire to heed Your voice and follow You. I surrender my life and all I have to You. In Your name, amen.
