Finding Strength and Refuge in God

Daily Devotional2 Minutes

Finding strength and refuge in God reminds us that when we feel isolated or burdened, He is our stronghold, comfort, and source of hope.

“O LORD, my strength and my stronghold, my refuge in the day of trouble, to you shall the nations come … ‘I will make them know my power and my might; and they shall know that my name is the LORD.’”—Jeremiah 16:19–21

Jeremiah felt isolated, surrounded by people who chased the wrong goals and had the wrong perspective. These people “inherited nothing but lies, worthless things in which there is no profit” (v. 19). They were following gods of their own imagination. They had forsaken God and been deceived by clever ideas.

Jeremiah mourned their mistakes, hoping they would repent. Overwhelmed, he called out to God. Only God could provide the strength he needed. When others rejected him, he could take refuge in the Lord, his stronghold.

Jeremiah realized that someday God would correct every wrong. The nations would come to Him from the ends of the earth, realizing the futility of their ways. God would make known His great power and might.

As Jeremiah experienced, it can be lonely to serve God. Those who follow Him can face rejection and criticism. They can be troubled to see so many people rejecting the Gospel and how few turn to God in a world filled with sin and problems.

Make sure that you focus on serving God. Be faithful and concentrate on completing His assignment for you. If you feel alone or burdened, remember you can call on Him anytime.

He is ready to comfort and reassure you, give you hope, take away your burdens, meet your needs, renew your strength, and be your stronghold and refuge.

Reflection Question: Where do you turn for strength when life feels heavy?
