Curiosity

Daily Devotional2 Minutes

Don’t let your curiosity override your discernment.

“Be careful that you are not ensnared to follow them, after they are destroyed from your presence, and that you do not inquire about their gods, saying, ‘How do these nations serve their gods, that I also may do likewise?’”Deuteronomy 12:30 NASB

Curiosity was the “one ruling passion” of Leonardo da Vinci, according to art historian Kenneth Clark. This curiosity helped da Vinci become one of history’s greatest innovators. His passion was to explore, draw, and invent. Clark called him “the most relentlessly curious man in history. Everything he saw made him ask how and why.”

Curiosity can be a beneficial motivation. It inspires scientists to dig for new discoveries, moves people to brave danger and explore new territories, and fuels personal growth.

But curiosity also can be damaging, and God wants us to be alert to its dangers. Curiosity has led people to dabble in harmful and ungodly activities and lifestyles or to listen to ideas that lead them astray.
The ways of the world can seem very inviting. Moses used the word “ensnared” to describe what can happen if we devote ourselves to exploring worldly ways.

To serve and please the Lord, we must temper our curiosity about things He has clearly forbidden. Some information and entertainment options are not helpful to our spiritual lives. We do not need to naively listen to everyone’s advice and opinions, sample every product offered to us, or believe everything we are told. God’s wisdom and discernment will spare us much trouble in life.

Make sure your life is grounded in the Word of God. Stay firm in your spiritual foundation. Let God guide and direct your path.
