Your Shepherd

“The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not want. He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters. He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake.”—Psalm 23:1–3

One weekend in March 1862, Rev. Joseph Gilmore turned to Psalm 23 for the text of his sermon at his church in Philadelphia. It was a dark time for his country, torn apart by the Civil War. Gilmore was burdened because his nation and its leaders needed God’s help more than ever before.

As he preached that morning, he felt particularly moved when he read the words, “He leadeth me.” After the service, this phrase continued to stir his heart. He felt moved to write a poem inspired by that phrase.

It was a poem that expressed the joy and peace he felt as he realized that he could depend on God to guide him. He was confident that whatever he did and wherever he went, God’s hand still would be present to lead him.

When his wife read this poem, she realized he had captured an important message and submitted the poem for publication. When composer William Bradbury read the poem, he was moved to write accompanying music. For many generations, the combination of Bradbury’s music and Gilmore’s words have reminded believers that the Lord is our Shepherd, and He will lead us.
