Overcoming Weariness
As a hired worker who eagerly waits for his wages … and nights of trouble are apportioned to me. When I lie down, I say, “When shall I arise?” But the night continues, and I am continually tossing until dawn.—Job 7:2–4 NASB
Job felt hopeless; nothing made sense. He felt like he was drudging through his days like an unhappy laborer, just going through the motions.
Nothing ever seemed to change: “When I lie down, I say, ‘When shall I arise?’” Then, he tossed all night. His words remind us of Ecclesiastes. That life can seem pointless and meaningless. That nothing can seem to matter (Ecclesiastes 1:2–3).
This is how David felt when he wrote, “I am weary with my sighing; every night I make my bed swim, I flood my couch with my tears” (Psalm 6:6). On a similar occasion, he wrote, “I am weary with my crying … my eyes fail while I wait for my God” (Psalm 69:3).
The weight of life’s challenges can make us weary. We can be overwhelmed by worries about work and family. We can be troubled and feel like giving up.
In moments like these, David turned to God. His cry? “I shall be watching for You; my soul thirsts for You, my flesh yearns for You, in a dry and exhausted land where there is no water” (Psalm 63:1).
If you feel weary, cry out to God about the troubles you face. Seek Him. Stand on His Word. Remember, the things of this world are passing away. Don’t focus on the temporary things you can see but on the eternal things (2 Corinthians 4:18).
