The Last Supper

The Last Supper

Leonardo da Vinci seemed like he could master any discipline. He was a painter, sculptor, architect, engineer, writer, and philosopher. In 1496, this genius turned his attention to Jesus’ last night on earth. The result was The Last Supper, considered among the greatest of all paintings.

Da Vinci focused on the moment Jesus told His disciples that one of them would betray Him. Scholar Frank Zöllner describes Jesus sitting in the center. At the far left, Bartholomew rises in agitation while James and Andrew “raise their hands in surprise.” Peter looks angry while Judas fingers “the pouch with the money he has been paid to betray the Lord.” To the right are two more groups of disciples.

Da Vinci is one of many artists who sought to give his personal vision of this event. Each of us can imagine what that night must have been like. Jesus felt it was critical to celebrate the Passover with His disciples. He washed their feet and taught them about the future and the Holy Spirit.

As you ponder that final meal on this Maundy Thursday, seek to make it real for yourself! As Jesus broke bread, He gave thanks and told the disciples to “do this in remembrance of Me” (Luke 22:19).

Think of all that Jesus did for you. He became your Passover Lamb and by example taught the importance of being a servant. Victory is yours because of Jesus!
