Hidden Blessings of Struggle: How to Count It All Joy
God can plant joy in your heart even when your circumstances have not changed.
That may sound impossible when life feels heavy. When you are walking through pressure, disappointment, uncertainty, or loss, joy can seem like the last thing within reach. Yet God’s Word invites us into something deeper than temporary happiness. Scripture shows us how to find joy in hard times, not by denying the struggle, but by trusting what God is doing within it.
My friend, your hardship is not wasted in the hands of God. He can use even the difficult seasons of your life to strengthen your faith, shape your character, and draw you closer to His presence.
That is one of the hidden blessings of struggle. Through faith in Christ, you can learn how to count it all joy, even before your circumstances change.
Why Joy Feels Hard to Find
Have you ever wondered why so many believers struggle to live in the joy of the Lord?
For some people, finding joy feels like trying to catch a butterfly. No matter how hard they try, it seems to move just beyond their reach. They pray for joy. They search for joy. They long for joy. Yet their hearts remain weighed down by the circumstances around them.
But God is a joyful God. And because we are His children, living in His grace and love, He wants His joy to be alive within us. True joy is more than a pleasant feeling. It is the evidence of a heart that is resting in the Father’s care, trusting His goodness, and yielding every circumstance to His hands.
Look at the life of Jesus, and you can see this beautiful truth at work. Everywhere He went, Jesus carried the fullness of God’s joy and gave that joy away to others. When He healed the crippled woman, she stood up and began praising God (Luke 13:13). When the leprous man was healed, he returned to Jesus joyfully, praising God with a loud voice (Luke 17:15).
There is no question that Christ came to reveal the Father’s grace and bring joy to broken lives. He was moved by compassion. He touched the hurting. He restored the rejected. He transformed hearts for eternity.
Yet perhaps you are thinking, “David, I have known the joy of the Lord before, but lately it feels distant.”
I’ve got good news, my friend. We have all faced seasons when God’s joy seemed like a memory instead of a present reality. But you can pray the same prayer King David prayed in Psalm 51:12, asking the Lord to restore the joy of His salvation.
When you come to the Lord with a humble and repentant heart, you can be confident that He hears you. He is able to restore what has been lost. He is able to refresh what has grown weary. He is able to fill your heart again with the joy of His salvation.
The True Source of Joy
With such a great promise from God, why are so many Christians not experiencing the joy He offers?
The answer is often very simple. Many people are trying to find joy outside of an intimate relationship with their Heavenly Father. They think, “If my circumstances change, then I will have joy. If I get the answer I want, then I will have peace. If life becomes easier, then I will rejoice.”
But lasting joy does not begin with changed circumstances. It begins with Jesus.
At the center of true joy is our Lord and Savior. He is the source of our faith, our thanksgiving, and our hope. Joy begins when we surrender to Christ and allow Him to transform us from the inside out.
When your joy is in Jesus, it is not limited to an occasional emotional high. It is not here one day and gone the next. It is “joy unspeakable and full of glory” (1 Peter 1:8 KJV)—a joy that can remain even when life becomes difficult.
King David understood where true joy comes from. In Psalm 16:11, he reminds us that fullness of joy is found in the presence of the Lord.
Friend, let that promise sink deep into your heart today. The only place to find lasting joy is in the presence of God. Your circumstances may bounce up and down like a yo-yo, but your joy can remain steady because Jesus Himself is with you.
That is why the apostle Paul could write, “Rejoice in the Lord always” (Philippians 4:4). He was not writing those words from a place of comfort. He was writing from a prison cell. His surroundings were limited, but his joy was not, because his joy was rooted in Christ.
How to Count It All Joy
So what does it truly mean to count it all joy when life is hard?
James 1:2-4 gives us the answer. James does not tell us to pretend trials do not hurt. He does not ask us to deny reality or act as though pain is pleasant. Instead, he calls us to see our trials through the eyes of faith, knowing that God can use the testing of our faith to produce steadfastness.
That is a powerful truth. To count it all joy is not to feel happy about hardship. It is to trust God in the hardship. It is a deliberate act of faith that says, “Lord, I may not understand everything You are doing, but I trust You to work in me and through me.”
When you are walking through a difficult season, begin by shifting your focus from what is happening around you to what God is producing within you. The trial may be painful, but it is not pointless. God may be strengthening your endurance, deepening your prayer life, teaching you to depend on Him, or preparing you for a greater purpose than you can see right now.
Then lean into His presence rather than your own understanding. Proverbs 3:5 reminds us to trust in the Lord with all our heart. In the middle of struggle, that trust becomes the anchor for your soul. Pray. Worship. Open God’s Word. Tell Him honestly what you are facing. His presence changes the atmosphere of your heart.
And never forget that your struggle is not the end of the story. In John 16:22, Jesus told His disciples that their sorrow would be turned into joy and that no one would take that joy from them. That promise still speaks to you today.
Your trial is real. Your pain matters. But God is still faithful.
Joy is not a hat you wear one day and leave at home the next. It is an attitude of the heart that grows as you walk with Jesus. It is part of your new nature in Christ. It is the steady confidence that God is with you, God is working, and God will have the final word.
Christ Is Your Joy
It is important to remember that the Christian life is not meant to be lived by simply studying what Jesus did and then trying to duplicate His example in your own strength.
That will only leave you weary.
The Christian life is not a script to be acted out. It is Jesus living His life through you by the power of the Holy Spirit. Colossians 3:4 reminds us that Christ is our life. Galatians 2:20 declares that we no longer live by ourselves, but Christ lives in us.
That changes everything.
Jesus does not merely give you joy as something separate from Himself. He is your joy. He is your strength. He is your peace. He is your life.
There is an old hymn that says it so simply: “Trust and obey, for there’s no other way to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.” That is God’s desire for you today—not that you would be controlled by your circumstances, but that you would be joyful and content in Him because He never changes.
My friend, Christ alone is your salvation. He is the firm anchor for your faith. When you put Him at the center of your life, He gives you joy unspeakable—joy that the world cannot create and circumstances cannot destroy.
His blessings are real. His presence is near. And because your joy is grounded firmly in Him, you can count it all joy even in the middle of the struggle.
