At England’s Cambridge University in the 1930s, the USSR recruited several bright students to spy against their own country. Eventually these men infiltrated the highest levels of British government.

One key to their success was they didn’t look like spies. Even when evidence against them increased, many authorities couldn’t imagine that they were spies. They didn’t fit the expected profile.

One interesting recruit was art historian Sir Anthony Blunt. His father had been a pastor who was held in high regard.

During World War II, Blunt supplied classified information to the USSR. After gaining a position with high security clearance, he monitored diplomats from neutral countries and invented a system for discovering the contents of supposedly secure diplomatic bags. He also stole top-secret documents from officials’ desks.

During the course of the war, Blunt passed nearly 2,000 documents to the USSR. Yet, as an expert in art and architecture, he was called “the most powerful and influential man in British art history.” He was so beloved that one student commented, “We all wanted to be like Blunt.”

The Bible reminds us of how difficult it can be to recognize deception. Remember, “even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light” (2 Corinthians 11:14 ESV) and false prophets can seem innocent and appealing. They can fool anyone. Even you.
