Appreciation and Personal Value

On a recent comedy TV series, two sons were discussing their father, and his need for a new residence. One option was to move him to a retirement center, which advertised this promise: “We care, so you don’t have to.” This joke, delivered with biting, tongue-in-cheek humor, illustrates the way some approach this subject. They just don’t want to think about it.

The fact is that the population is aging, the result of declining birth rates and longer life expectancy. Millions of more people now are considered “senior citizens.” (The U.S. Census Bureau projects that by 2035, most adults will be over 65.)

This gives rise to many questions. What is our attitude toward those considered “old”? Parents? Grandparents? Friends? And what is the best attitude of senior citizens themselves as they age?

The Bible has much to say about this subject. First, we are reminded that we are to show respect for those who are older, and not ignore them.

At the same time, the reality is that all of us are getting older. We cannot escape this fact. The Bible reminds us that God can use us at every stage of life. We are reminded, for example, that Moses led the Israelites for forty years, until late in his life.

We can contribute, even as we age. But we also are reminded that we can “hang on” too long, and need we to think about the future, and give opportunities to younger generations.

In your life, ask God to give you His attitude toward friends and family, and even people you don’t know. Remember that every person, young and old, was created by God, with special gifts and talents, with unique experiences, and special ways to contribute.
