A Covenant with God

The Mayflower Compact was foundational for American history. This agreement was signed on this day in 1620. This was the first governmental agreement written by colonists in the New World, signed by 41 passengers of the ship, the Mayflower, as it anchored off the coast of modern day Massachusetts.

This covenant revealed this group’s goals, and why they risked their lives on this dangerous journey. They acknowledged that they had traveled across the ocean “for the glory of God, and advancement of the Christian faith.” Theirs was a covenant not only with each other, but also with God.

They knew that their actions were signed “solemnly and mutually in the presence of God, and one of another.” Because of their example, the American people can claim a heritage based on a covenant relationship with each other, and with God Himself.

The Bible teaches that covenants are important to God. In fact, the Bible is filled with covenant agreements He made with Noah, Abraham, and others. In each situation, God gave His Word. But the fulfillment of His promises depended on the actions of those with whom He made each covenant. To receive the benefits, they had to do their part.

God’s promises still are true. He has promised His people health and protection, wisdom and guidance, power and strength, grace and peace. But we must keep our part of that covenant relationship. To receive the benefits, we must obey His Word and be faithful to Him.

In your life, don’t take God for granted. But remember to do your part, confident that He will keep His Word. And pray for your country, that there might be renewed commitment to serve Him. That others would remember the compact of those pilgrims and why they risked their lives.
