On the Attack

“You are from God, little children, and have overcome them; because greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world.”
1 John 4:4 NASB

It was a time of transition, and the French army under Napoleon, their dynamic leader, needed new blood. Auguste-Frédéric-Louis Viesse Marmont distinguished himself, rising to the position of colonel when he was only 22.

Born on this day in 1774, Marmont proved to be a brilliant administrator and tactician, becoming one of Napoleon’s chief lieutenants. But in March 1814, he joined those opposing Napoleon. After Napoleon’s fall, Marmont was made a peer, but went into exile after the French revolution of July 1830.

While he was in exile, he wrote an important, nine-volume memoir that summarized many of his insights. One central principle he believed was essential for victory: offensive warfare. A strong defense was important, but Marmont believed that more often battles were lost when armies were passive.

American military genius Robert E. Lee was among the many influenced by Marmont, in particular, his belief that “the attacking general has, to a large extent, command of the mind of his defensive opponents.”

While applying in the realm of military strategy, Marmont’s insights have important parallels in our spiritual lives. Many Christians approach their spiritual lives from a passive perspective. As a result, they are perpetually vulnerable. They continually feel assaulted and even defeated, assuming that the devil has all the advantages.

But the Bible reminds us that, because of Jesus, we are more than conquerors (Romans 8:37). We already have the victory and have access to all of God’s power. We do not have to accept defeat. If we are bold and spiritually aggressive, we can be victorious in all our battles.

Today, remember that you have the power of God within you. Because of His presence, you can be victorious in every situation you face. Don’t be passive but bold. Trust God for victory.

Prayer: Father, I believe that You want me to be victorious in every area of my life. Thank You for the power that You have given me. I declare victory. In Jesus’ name! Amen.
