Spirit vs. Flesh

It’s spirit vs. flesh in the world, so make sure you’re properly prepared for battle.

“Keep watching and praying, so that you will not come into temptation; the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”—Mark 14:38 NASB

Jesus knew His disciples would face challenges. The night before His crucifixion, He knew that they would be stretched and forced to deal with new pressures. They would be tempted and discouraged. What was the answer? Prayer.

He was “very distressed and troubled,” and “deeply grieved to the point of death” (vs. 33–34). Jesus responded by praying fervently. In contrast, His disciples fell asleep. Their response revealed that they needed the power of the Spirit.

All believers can fall into the same trap, depending on ourselves and our own resources. But we all need to learn to depend on the Spirit and recognize the weaknesses of our flesh.

No matter how strong we might feel, our bodies inevitably weaken. No matter how determined, we always fall short. No matter how much we desire perfection, we will fail. As we are stretched and face temptations and trials, we have hope by depending on the Spirit.

These principles are true at every stage of life. Our bodies may experience diminished strength, but the Spirit is powerful and willing. As we depend on the Spirit, His power flows through us, giving us insight and strength.

Learn from Jesus’ example. When you face unknowns and difficulties, turn to prayer and depend on the Spirit. He is ready to give you the power, wisdom, and ability you need. He can help you commune with God and overcome sins and weaknesses.
