Dangerous Drifting

“But I have this against you, that you have left your first love.” – Revelation 2:4 NASB

The Believers in Ephesus had been model Christians. Strong in their commitment to the Gospel. Spiritually mature. Making wise choices. Refusing to compromise or “tolerate evil men.” They had been hard-working, and had “not grown weary.”

Yet, in spite of all these positive traits, they had left their first love. In the sight of Jesus, this was not a small matter. It was so serious a problem that, unless they repented, He would “remove your lampstand out of its place.” To Him, this proved that they had “fallen.” This required corrective action.

Why was this so important? Because love is a true expression of the heart. Throughout His ministry, Jesus made clear that He wanted a love relationship with His followers. In one of His last dialogues with His disciples, three times He asked Peter if he loved Him (John 21:15-17).

True love is a bonding relationship, reflecting a total commitment. To Jesus, this was more important than all their hard work , discernment, and faithfulness. Sadly these Ephesians may not have realized that this had taken place, that they had drifted away from Him in their hearts. He was calling them back to the same, fervent desires that they once had felt.

Knowing that some might not respond, He warned, “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.” He knew that this was important. To have overcoming faith, and to experience victorious living, we must have a personal relationship with Jesus. A relationship that goes beyond words and beliefs, actions or accomplishments.

We must truly love Him. What is your relationship with Jesus? How much do you love Him? Have you drifted apart?

Prayer: Dear Lord Jesus, it is so easy to become focused on the things of this world. Help me to renew my love for You. In Your name. Amen.
