True Worship

“‘Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we saw His star in the east and have come to worship Him.’ . . . He sent them to Bethlehem and said, ‘Go and search carefully for the Child; and when you have found Him, report to me, so that I too may come and worship Him.’ . . . They fell to the ground and worshiped Him.” Matthew 2:1-11 NASB

The magi arrived in Jerusalem motivated by a sincere desire. They had left their homeland and traveled hundreds of miles, in the face of many unknowns, with one purpose. To worship the new King.

Herod, too, said he wanted to know the location of this King. Why? Because he, too, wanted to “worship Him.” But, while speaking of worship, we know that he was not sincere.

He may have wanted others to think he was spiritual and committed to God’s Kingdom. But, in fact, he was only concerned about protecting his power and silencing any who sought to challenge his control. He spoke with reverence, but his words masked selfishness and pride and a ruthless disregard for anything but his own desires.

How different the actions of the wise men. They did not just speak of worship but demonstrated a commitment in their lives. They were reverent and humble. They willingly had given up all to honor and worship the new King. While Herod wanted to continue ruling his own kingdom, these wise men laid everything aside to worship Jesus.

Thinking about the birth of Jesus provides an opportunity to examine our own hearts. Our own desires and interests. Our own kingdoms. Fostering our own control. Preserving our position and power. Speaking of humility and worship while, in reality, harboring hearts filled with self.

The call of Christmas is the call of humility. The call for authentic worship. To lay everything else aside to worship Jesus.

Prayer: Dear Lord Jesus, I humble myself before You. Purify my heart of anything that might displease You. May my life bring You glory and praise. I worship You! In Your name. Amen.
