An Unsung Hero

Deborah commanded Barak to lead the troops into battle. But Barak responded with a condition: “If you go with me, I will go; but if you don’t go with me, I won’t go.” She felt that his actions would rob him of the honor due a military commander. And, as she predicted, when Israel was victorious, the honor went to Deborah.

Some might conclude that Barak was a coward. But, our perspective changes when we realize that he is listed in the “faith hall of fame” in the company of men like Abraham and Moses (Hebrews 11:32). This suggests that, in fact, perhaps the key to Israel’s victory was Barak’s faith.

As we think about why he was so honored, it becomes clear that Barak demonstrated a greater concern for serving his people and obeying God than getting glory. By asking Deborah to accompany the troops into battle, he was honoring her, and acknowledging her relationship with God. He was willing to let her receive the glory, and bold enough to submit to her, with the courage to follow his convictions.

Barak left a legacy of faith. Like him, you need to put your trust in God. Ask Him to help you be an example of faith for the people all around you. Seek to be a servant, ready to give honor to others. Put your trust in God and commit your way to Him. Be humble, courageous, and bold as you serve Him. To commit your way to Him in every situation you face. And always move forward by faith!
