Confusion and Madness

As the Israelites prepared to enter the Promised Land, Moses provided a series of blessings that would result if they obeyed God and His commands. But if they disobeyed God, they could expect a series of problems.

One byproduct would be mental problems. They would experience “confusion” and “madness.” They would not be able to think clearly, or make the right decisions.

The Hebrew words here suggest being bewildered and confounded. Feeling disoriented and lacking perspective. Being unable to process information correctly or determine the best solutions.

In the world, there are many possible explanations for these types of situations. But the Believer should realize that, like everything else, the key is to start with God.

The Bible is filled with promises. We should know that “the LORD gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding” (Proverbs 2:6).

If we need wisdom, the Bible tells us to ask God, “who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him.” But following the same principles provided by Deuteronomy, we see that our asking will be negated if we have the wrong attitude. We must “ask in faith without any doubting.”

If our minds are filled with doubt and uncertainty, we will not receive the wisdom we need.“For the one who doubts is like the surf of the sea, driven and tossed by the wind. For that man ought not to expect that he will receive anything from the Lord” (James 1:5-7).

Do you feel confused? Uncertain? Do you face situations that don’t appear to have a solution? That don’t make sense? The answer is to start with God. Make sure you base your life on His Word, and that you obey His principles. And don’t forget to ask Him about what you need.
