In Tune with God

As a priest, Pashhur took it for granted that he had spiritual authority. That only his interpretations were correct. That he could dictate what was to be believed.

But the prophecies of Jeremiah challenged these assumptions. Seeking to demonstrate his authority, Pashhur had Jeremiah beaten and put in stocks. But, after being released, Jeremiah delivered a strong message about who really was speaking for God.

Pashhur (whose name means “freedom”) had felt free to say what he wanted. But, in fact, his interpretations were his own. The priest was given a new name that meant “terror on every side.”

God was letting Pashhur know that He still was sovereign. The priest could not stop His true messages. In fact, he would lose his freedoms. He and his friends would be exiled, and his nation would lose wealth, produce, and even their treasures.

The world has always been full of people like Pashhur. People with opinions that reflect their personal views. People eager to impose their own interpretations and spread their own ideas. But who, in fact, have not humbled themselves before God and are not sensitive to His Spirit. For a season, these people may seem to triumph, while God’s true message may seem lost or muzzled.

But the story of Pashhur reminds us that God always knows the truth. His true servants may experience temporary trials and opposition. But, in the end, the truth will emerge.

In your life, don’t be discouraged by momentary challenges. Renew your commitment to serve God and seek His Word. Like Jeremiah, seek to be in tune with Him, regardless of the reaction of other people. And be ready to obey, trusting Him. Remember, He knows what you are going through. He will reward you for your faithfulness.
