For centuries, maps were considered highly sensitive documents. Even state secrets. The possession of many maps was controlled by governments, held behind lock and key, with distribution prohibited on the penalty of death.

The process of developing maps was complex and somewhat subjective. Few had the ability to draw maps. In many cases, maps represented best guesses. What people thought might exist. Where borders might be found. How kings wanted to divide territories.

Maps also contained information that some wanted to keep confidential. The location of important places and cities, and routes to be followed (and avoided).

But the development of the printing press in the 15th century opened the door to a new way of utilizing maps. Formerly, these were copied under controlled conditions. However, presses made it possible for maps to be printed with accuracy, and in great quantities.

By 1500 there were approximately 60,000 individual printed maps in circulation within Europe. By 1600 this number had risen to more than a million. This explosion of maps had a widespread impact, on travel and exploration, commerce and war, and politics and even religion. Maps empowered individuals and made it harder for governments to manipulate and control.

In the spiritual realm, many people feel that spiritual breakthroughs and Biblical understanding are locked away, like those ancient maps. Only available to a few. Too difficult to grasp.

But the Bible makes clear that God wants to have a personal relationship with each of us. That riches are in store for anyone who studies His Word. Those who ask and seek. Who are like the Bereans who searched the Scriptures “day after day.”

It is important to learn from others. But don’t neglect to study the Bible for yourself. Read and dig. Give God the opportunity to speak to you.
