The Spirit of FearThank you for joining me as we begin a new series, “How to Overcome Fear.”
If I had to name one spirit that controls, dominates, possesses, oppresses, vexes, and torments most people in the world today, including Christians, I would say it’s the spirit of fear.
Let’s talk about what a spirit is and where it comes from. And most importantly, how can you overcome a spirit of fear?
2nd Timothy chapter 1 verse 7 says that God hasn’t given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.
Fear is more than an emotion. It’s more than a feeling. The Bible calls it a spirit.
Have you ever given much thought to what the Bible means when it refers to a spirit? Jesus speaking in John 4:24 tells us that God is a spirit. In fact, the book of Isaiah chapter 11 and verse 2 describes seven different spirits of God.
In Revelation we read more about the seven spirits of God.
So it’s clear, God is a spirit. He’s not flesh and bone. He’s not made of stone or any other material. He is spirit.
In Hebrews chapter 1 verse 4, it asks the question, “Aren’t all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?”
Here the Bible calls God’s angels ministering spirits.
God isn’t the only one who has angels who serve Him and worship Him. In Heaven, before Satan led a rebellion against God, he was the praise and worship leader. He led worship before the throne of God. When Satan rebelled against God, the Bible records that one-third of the angels in Heaven followed him.
God cast Satan and those angels out of Heaven. Some theologians refer to the angels God cast out as fallen angels or demons.
My point is this: Just as God has ministering angels, spirits who do good, Satan has ministering spirits, demons whose purpose is to kill, steal, and destroy you.
Throughout the life and ministry of Jesus, He referred to unclean spirits, spirits of sickness and oppression, tormenting spirits, and others. Time and again, Jesus exercised authority over those demon spirits, rebuked them, and cast them out.
This isn’t a study on spiritual warfare. If you want to learn more about spiritual warfare, I have a book I’ve written on the subject. It’s called The Battle for Your Life. It’s available to you through our website, inspiration.org.
People today talk about all kinds of power. Governmental power. Economic power. Military power. I believe the fundamental two powers in all the world are the power of God and Satan. Good and evil. And while Satan and his power are no match for God, those two forces are in constant warfare.
God’s angels and the devil’s demons are waging a fierce spiritual battle in an unseen world. That battle isn’t raging in some far-off distant place. It’s raging against your life and family, whether you realize it or not.
The devil is real and his power is real. He will continue to prey upon you to the degree you are ignorant of how he operates. I want you to be aware of his plans, plots, schemes, and tactics.
Make no mistake about it…fear is a spirit and it intends to cripple you. Its purpose is to rob you of your peace of mind and hold you back from realizing God’s dreams for you and your destiny.
You don’t have to be a victim in this battle. There are things you can do to overcome this spirit of fear.
I’ll be sharing more about that and this important subject in the episodes to come. I hope you’ll join me.
Until then remember: God doesn’t intend for you to have a spirit of fear. Instead, He wants you to have a spirit of love, of power, and of a sound mind.
God bless you.
