Adonai

Adonai is more than just a name of God; it conveys understanding of who God is and claims a right relationship with Him. Abraham, Moses, Joshua, and Isaiah are among the people of Scripture who lived with God as their Adonai. They recognized God’s role as Master – the One with the responsibility to provide, protect, and direct them. Equally important, they understood “Yes, Lord” as the only appropriate reply to God’s instructions. Total submission to the all-powerful Master is the concept rolled into the name Adonai.

While blessing, power, and eternal hope are wrapped into this special name of God, it also comes with one of the direst warnings of Scripture. Jesus explained that many will use the name Adonai without ever experiencing the relationship it signifies: Lord and Master. And at the end of the age, those who have done so will hear Jesus say, “I never knew you. Get away from me” (Matthew 7:23 NLT). The empty use of God’s name brings eternal destruction.

Living in relationship with Adonai, surrendered and obedient, produces the abundant life Jesus promised in John 10:10. But it is humanly impossible to live in right relationship with God without the help of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:3). Our celebration of Pentecost is joyful praise for the work of the Spirit in our lives and our world.

Just before Jesus went to the cross, He assured the disciples that His departure would bring blessings to them:

But in fact, it is best for you that I go away, because if I don’t, the Advocate won’t come. If I do go away, then I will send him to you (John 16:7 NLT).

We need the Holy Spirit to live the life Jesus died to give us. The way to Adonai is through the cross in the power of the Holy Spirit.
