Singleness of Purpose

“Of Zebulun 50,000 seasoned troops, equipped for battle with all the weapons of war, to help David with singleness of purpose.” - 1 Chronicles 12:33 ESV

Among those who served in David’s army, those from the tribe of Zebulun had two dominant characteristics. First, they were ready to fight, “equipped for battle.” And they also had “singleness of purpose” and undivided hearts.

This ability to focus meant that the men from Zebulun could be more effective soldiers. They were determined and not distracted. They would listen and follow orders. They knew their role and worked together as a team. What a joy it must have been to lead such men!

God rewards those who have this singleness of purpose. The Bible tells us that God is willing to give wisdom to those who ask. But there is a condition. We must ask in faith, without doubting, for those who doubt are “like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind.” Such people are “double-minded” and “unstable” in all their ways, and they shouldn’t expect to “receive anything from the Lord” (James 1:5-8).

Paul had this kind of focus, pressing “toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 3:14). He described life as a race, reminding us, “Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it” (1 Corinthians 9:24).

How easily we can find ourselves distracted by the things of the world. We can be lured into craving the wrong goals and seeking short-term pleasures that don’t last. But Jesus calls us to be single-minded, seeking first the Kingdom of God (Matthew 6:33). In order to follow Him and be His disciples, we must lay everything else aside, deny ourselves, and take up our cross daily (Luke 9:23).

This kind of focus unlocks the riches of His Kingdom. Doors are opened for more fulfillment and greater wisdom and understanding. You can receive more of His supernatural blessings and breakthroughs!

Father, help me to be free from distractions. I commit my time, talent, and treasure to You. I will seek first Your Kingdom. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
