Need a Breakthrough for Your Family

Need a Breakthrough for Your Family?

John D. GarrBy John D. Garr4 Minutes

When God initiated a covenant with Abram (Abraham), it’s stunning that it included blessings for our families:

I will make you a great nation; I will bless you
And make your name great; And you shall be a blessing…
And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed (Genesis 12:2-3).

If your family needs some kind of breakthrough today, this covenant promise is great news. It means that no matter what difficult circumstances you may be facing, God loves you and stands ready to come to your aid.

But don’t miss the first step in your turnaround: gaining a correct understanding of what your Heavenly Father is like. Far too many people think of Him as a harsh, bitter, old man who sits on a throne in a land far, far away just waiting for an opportunity to judge some poor soul who has violated one of His commandments.

Yet God is revealed in the Bible as just the opposite – as a God of love, mercy, and kindness. Your Heavenly Father is the God of blessing, and the apostle Paul wrote that He already “has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ” (Ephesians 1:3).

God’s nature is declared throughout the Bible. King David said, “The Lord is good to all, and His tender mercies are over all His works” (Psalm 145:9). John declared that “God is love,” and he maintained that without love it is impossible to know God (1 John 4:8).

What a great God He is!

From Curses to Blessings

Despite these glowing descriptions of God’s love for us as His children, many believers still feel like they’re struggling to get out from under some kind of curse. Perhaps their family is dealing with financial lack, a health problem, or broken relationships, and they find themselves blaming God.

How could this be?

While God’s Word constantly speaks of His desire to bring blessing into every life and every family, it also is very candid in warning against the tragic consequences of sin. But since the Lord is the God of blessing, He was not content to leave humanity in sin. Rather than dwelling on our original sin, God brought about the cross of Jesus in order to return us to His own plan for humanity: original blessing.

Instead of seeking to condemn us for our sins, God “gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life” (John 3:16). To ensure the fulfillment of His original plan to bless humankind, God was manifested in the flesh in the person of His Son (John 1:14) to offer Himself as an atonement for humanity’s sins (Ephesians 1:7).

Now all who come to faith in Jesus are delivered from the curse of sin, able to fully enter into their Heavenly Father’s blessing.

My friend, you can depend upon God’s desire to bless you, for that is a part of His very nature as your loving Heavenly Father. Call upon the God of blessing today, and ask Him to bless you and your family with the breakthrough you need!
