Your Enemy & The Word

Sometimes we can think that God’s Word is a private document, unknown to our spiritual enemies. But the Bible makes it clear that Satan and his demons actually know the Word. In fact, they use their knowledge to spread confusion and doubt. If we let them, they can use this knowledge to defeat us!

This is exactly what he did with Eve in the Garden. The serpent knew what God had said, and was “more crafty than any beast of the field,” twisting God’s words into a message that deceived her (Genesis 3:1).

Satan used actual scriptures when he confronted Jesus in the wilderness. Seeking to twist God’s Word to tempt Him, he tried to trick Jesus into making mistakes. He did this not just once, but again and again. But Jesus was aware of Satan’s grasp of Scripture; He wasn’t fooled. He was prepared, and even used Scripture to defeat Satan (Matthew 4:1-11).

Satan attacks us in the same way today! Sadly, some Christians will become victims of his deception. They will be like Eve, unable to resist his shrewd strategies and crafty words. Others will be vulnerable, and be willing to believe his clever lies. This is how cults are formed, and false doctrines develop. But this also is how believers can get into trouble, and drift away from the truth.

What can you do to have victory over this deceptive enemy? First, you need to know the Word. You can’t take this for granted! Read it every day. Memorize it! Study it! Then put it into action. Stand on its promises.

Don’t let the enemy fool you. Fight back. When you are tempted, quote Scripture. And be strong in the Spirit. Don’t accept defeat or give up. You can be victorious in Jesus’ name!
