Worthy of Your Calling

John Quincy Adams (“JQA”) had one of the most distinguished careers in American history. In addition to being ambassador to Great Britain, the Netherlands, Berlin, and Russia, he was a member of both the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives. Adams also was the Secretary of State and sixth President of the United States.

One reason for this rich, fulfilling life was the Biblical upbringing JQA received from his parents, John Adams (the second President) and Abigail Adams. As an adult, JQA recognized that this training had provided him with a strong foundation for life. While serving in England in 1815, he wrote to thank his parents for teaching him the Bible, which he knew enabled him to withstand temptations and mature as a man and statesman.

Although his faith always had been important to him, Adams recognized that he needed to take a more public stand. October 1, 1826, he heard a sermon based on Ephesians 4 which reminded him that Believers are called by God and meant to walk in a manner worthy of that calling. As a result, JQA made a public confession of his faith in Christ at his church.

Today, God is looking for people with this same commitment to obey His call and serve Him…those who are willing “to walk in a manner worthy of the calling with which you have been called.”

What is God’s calling on your life? What gifts and talents has He given you? Make sure you take advantage of the opportunities He gives you. Commit your life and resources to Him. Serve Him faithfully and seek to fulfill your unique destiny. Walk worthy of His call on your life!
