What Hath God Wrought

On this day in 1844, American art professor Samuel F.B. Morse inaugurated a telegraph link for commercial use between Washington, D.C. and Baltimore. This was a major event in human history, opening the door to a communications revolution.

For the first message sent via telegraph, Morse chose words from the Bible: “What hath God wrought!” He was reinforcing the truth that God was sovereign!

Morse was quoting the words of Balaam who had been recruited by Balak, the king of Moab, to curse the children of Israel. Much to Balak’s displeasure, Balaam reported that there was no force on earth powerful enough to stand against God. That His will would be done.

Both Morse and Balaam had recognized a powerful truth. Nations may rage. People may threaten. Armies and corporations may boast of their resources and seek to shape events to their purposes. At times, the forces of hell may seem in command.

But the Bible makes clear that no one can stand against God! He is bigger than every force on earth. He will carry out His plans, in each of our lives, and in the world around us.

Today, you may have challenges that seem impossible to solve. You may have many needs. The forces of darkness may seem overwhelming. But you can depend on God. You do not need to be afraid or anxious. Instead, commit your needs to Him. Sow into His Kingdom with the Seeds you have been given. Move forward in faith, and trust Him, confident that He will meet your needs.

Trust in Him. Commit your ways to Him. Seek first His Kingdom. Be a faithful servant. And witness to others about what He has done for you.
