True History

To some skeptics, the Bible is just a collection of stories. They believe that many of its characters may not have existed, and that many of its stories were little more than legends.

This was the attitude of many “experts” before discoveries made by Robert Koldewey. Born in Germany in 1855, Koldewey had a distinguished career in archeology before turning his attention to look for the city of Babylon (located in modern Iraq). His team began digging in the region in March 1899.

Koldewey belonged to the new generation of archeologists who employed cutting edge technology and careful scientific methodology. The result of his excavations was a series of revolutionary discoveries. A relief estimated at 960 feet long. The foundation of the temple of Marduk. The actual walls of Babylon (including bricks stamped with the name of King Nebuchadnezzar).

Koldewey shipped many objects to his home base, including hundreds of cuneiform tablets. When studied in depth, these tablets provided more unexpected insights, actually verifying numerous details found in the Bible. The texts even confirmed the supplies given to Judah’s King Jehoiachin while he was in Babylon.

What amazed many was the degree to which Koldewey’s discoveries were consistent with the Bible. He was proving that it wasn’t just a collection of stories. It was true.

As these discoveries demonstrate, great riches open before us when we believe God’s Word. The Psalmist understood this when he prayed, “Open my eyes, that I may see wondrous things from Your law” (Psalm 119:18).

Ask God to give you new revelations from His Word. That you might read with faith. That He might teach you deeper things, and change your life.
