Thirsting for God

Daily Devotional2 Minutes

“Everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat … Why do you spend … your wages for what does not satisfy? Listen carefully to Me, and eat what is good, and let your soul delight itself in abundance.” – Isaiah 55:1-2

Are there times it feels like you are in a spiritual desert? In a spiritually dry place? A place where you feel desperately thirsty? Unsatisfied?

When they are in such places, some people yield to the tempting options they hear in the world – ideas that promise satisfaction, actions that guarantee pleasure. The Bible warns us that much of this effort is like chasing the wind (Ecclesiastes 1:14). Instead of feeling fulfilled, efforts like these can leave us frustrated in spending our time and resources “for what does not satisfy.”

If you find yourself in situations like this, start focusing on God. Don’t chase after things that can’t deliver on their promises. Seek Him. Thirst after Him. The Bible promises that He offers living water that can quench your thirst and satisfy.

God doesn’t want to bless us just a little. The Bible says that He wants our souls to delight in abundance. Jesus said that He came that we might have life and “have it more abundantly” (John 10:10). Jesus also promised that if we turn to Him, “Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water” (John 7:38). Our thirst will be quenched.

Do you feel spiritually thirsty? Turn to Jesus. Pray. Spend time with Him. Commit your needs to Him. Allow Him to refresh you and give you His peace, satisfy you in profound and lasting ways, and quench your thirst.

Reflection Question: Do you long for God and His Word like you’re in a desert without water?

Dear Lord Jesus, I realize I cannot be satisfied apart from You. I thirst for You. I delight to do Your will. In Your name, amen.
